Never give up is one of the greatest maxims in rallying. Technical defects and smaller or greater botch-ups are simply part of the suffering of these marathon rallies. Ingenious improvisational skills, the fighting spirit of the drivers and co-drivers, and, later on, the service helicopters filled to the gunnels with top mechanics made ‘throwing in the towel’ a rare occurrence. Facing what seemed like insurmountable hurdles, they pushed on, even when their cars didn’t exactly comply with the traffic laws. An interesting chapter on the cold reshaping of the proud automobile and the hastily improvised appendages.
